The Big Bad Wolf House

Project Description

The Big Bad Wolf House (BBWH) is a self-directed learning center serving Southwest Detroit. It is located between 2 large trucking centers and two major highways (I-94 and I-96), and across the street from a school with high traffic during pick up and drop off times.

To address these sources of pollution while providing children with access to the outdoors, the BBWH aims to create an outdoor learning space with layers of filtration. The space will include

  • An air quality garden that will serve as a vegetative buffer,
  • A fence for additional protection from dust and noise coming from street traffic.

BBWH also plans to add air purifiers inside the learning center to improve indoor air quality.

Through this project, the Big Bad Wolf house hopes to inspire the community to think about the steps they can take to address air pollution by providing an opportunity for community building and learning.

CAPHE mini-grant funds will be used to purchase the materials needed for the outdoor buffers, as well as the indoor air purifiers. The outdoor space will continue to be maintained by the learning center’s community, including the learners, families, and staff.

CAPHE provided resources for planting buffers to assure that the plants used can act effectively as a vegetative buffer.
